A few things before the Break

  • You should have received an email from me last Friday – if your child had any missing assignments.  Please make sure those assignments come in by Friday.
  • Oral Language evaluations went home yesterday.  Please return the page entitled “Criteria for success” with your signature as soon as possible.  In the new year is fine as well, but the sooner the better.  The other copies (green newsletter and large evaluation page) can be kept at home.

For Friday, December 21st

  • If you want to send to school some treats to share with the class, please remember that we have 2 students with severe nut allergies, as well as a Kiwi allergy.  Please let me know what your son/daughter will be bringing.  (note: if you want to send beverages – please also provide the cups).
  • There will be a friendly competition between the 3 intermediate classes.  It’s a PJ, stuffy and blanket day. We will watch a movie and enjoy some snacks.
  • The competition categories are as follows:

a)  Best Bed Head

b)  Best Christmas theme

c)  Best slippers

d)  Most students wearing PJ’s per class.

Good luck everyone!  Hint hint…Mme. Strebel is VERY competitive.

Important Update for Dec 10th

The countdown has begun – Young Entrepreneurs is just 2 days away.  Make sure the Business Plans are typed up, neat and ready to go by Wednesday.  Some of the students have already brought in their displays/products, and we will be setting up in the gym tomorrow.  Please bring your products tomorrow.

Very important:  Tomorrow we will be discussing page 31 of their Business Planning Kits.  The students NEED to fill in the first part of the page before the Fair.  After the show, before leaving the gym, they are required to complete the rest of the page and have me sign it off.  I am asking that all money be returned to me (donations to the SPCA) by Friday, at the latest.

A reminder to have a $10 float ready to go for Wednesday (as well as a separate money supply for purchasing products).

I will hand out some invitations that the students can take home to their families tomorrow as well.

Please email me if you have any questions, as I will be accompanying the Volleyball teams at Ecole Phenix for the tournament and will not be at school for the afternoon.

I’m really excited to see the kids set up their businesses and enjoy taking part in fair.  They always have a lot of fun.

Thanks Smile

Six Simple Machines–An Obstacle Course

Follow the criteria below.  You may work on your own or with a partner.  If you work with a partner, then you only need to create one obstacle course.

DUE DATE:  MONDAY, DECEMBER 17TH

  • Design an obstacle course with at least 6 parts.
  • Each part must represent a different type of simple machine.
  • Complete the planning sheet that your teacher gave you to plan the project.  Each part must be detailed.
  • When you have designed and planed out the project, construct a model.  Make sure to follow the below criteria:
    • 3 dimensional
    • Each of the 6 machines must be represented as “separate” parts of your obstacle course.
    • You may use any materials of your choice to construct your model.  However, you must build your own machines.  (ie.  you can not use a miniature bicycle to represent a wheel and axle, etc.)  On the other hand, you can use figurines or miniature trees and other decorations throughout your model, etc.).
  • You must use your own materials to construct your model.  I can supply you with construction paper, glue, etc. Remember to bring things from home. (cardboard, etc.)

In addition to your 3-D model, you must include written instructions on how to complete your obstacle course.  The instructions must be written neatly and in order of each obstacle, in French.

Remember to hand in your project on time.  You will be given about 6 classes to work on this, so please do not waste your time and use your time appropriate.  Remember to come prepared to work on your project every day.

You will be evaluated on the following:

  • planning sheet was completed with accuracy
  • you drew out a plan of your obstacle course
  • your final model is a 3-Dimensional obstacle course
  • all 6 machines are represented separately
  • all 6 machines were constructed
  • team work, independent work habits, time management
  • the written directions are clear, well written, in French and any spelling/ grammatical errors do not interfere with the quality of the work
  • creative, well presented, unique, amount of effort put into the project

Important Information between now and December 21st

With December just around the corner, the month of November seemed to just fly by.  It’s hard to believe that we are just over 3 weeks before Christmas Break already.
Thank you to all the parents that helped out for our classroom’s pizza hot lunch fundraiser.  I couldn’t have done it without your help.

Young Entrepreneur Fair

The date is fast approaching.  It will be taking place in the school gym Wednesday, December 12th from 9:00am to 3:00pm.  There will be close to 90 kids selling their unique products to the school community, family and friends.  The students have been working hard in our class to prepare their Business Plans.  I gave each child a copy of a typed up business plan, as a guide for preparing their own. Students should now all be ready to begin typing up their good copies.  Here is some important details in preparation for our upcoming event:
  • All Business Plans must be typed and presented in a folder/report cover and displayed on their table during the Fair.
  • Hopefully students have begun mass production of their products. (fine tuned based on their market research results)  - please don’t wait until the last minute.
  • A float of $10 in change is recommended for the event.
  • If they plan on purchasing other products at the Fair, a separate supply of money is required.  We have had issues in the past with students taking money from their own float boxes to buy their friend’s products.  At the end of the day, they could not figure out how much money they made and some did not have any money to pay back their loans or donate 10% to the charity of choice.
  • The intermediate teachers are asking that students have their products and displays at school by Monday, December 10th. They will be 3 to a table, so no large displays please.  Table cloths, etc. are always a nice thing to see.  We will be making our posters at school.
  • All students are required to donate a minimum of 10% of their profits to our chosen Charity – the Campbell River SPCA.
  • It is the student’s responsibility to let me know ahead of time if any power outlets are required as this will impact their location in the gym.
Come see me or send me a message if you have any questions ahead of time.

Christmas Concert

This will take place Tuesday, December 18th at 7pm.  This year’s theme is Le Grincheux (The Grinch who Stole Christmas).  Your child will either be singing in the choir, playing the part of a Narrator or a Who, or singing the song “You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch”.  I am really excited to see this all come together, as the entire school will be taking part in our school play/musical/performance.  A huge thanks goes out to Mme. DenOuden, Mme. Attfield, Mr. Toupin and Mme. Guevremont for organizing this.
  • The dress-rehearsal - Tuesday, December 18th at 1pm.  Families are welcome.
  • School concert – Tuesday, December 18th at 7pm.

December’s Focus for Communicating Student Progress = French Oral Language !!!

December Academics

Math – we will continue to work on our multiplication and begin adding division.  It is very important that your child have a solid understanding of multiplication facts to 9 as this is the foundation for most upcoming math concepts in math this year.  Some ways that you can support your child at home is with Flash Cards, computer games (found in Resources section), there are many apps available on your iPhone, iPod, iPads, as well as by quizzing them in the car when going to different events and afterschool activities.
Sciences – we will continue studying Simple Machines.  We have completed a webquest to learn about the 6 simple machines and are going to be doing a hands-on project to demonstrate a further understanding of this.  I will post the criteria this week.
Socials – I am hoping to touch on First Nation cultures before the end of December.  This will be continued in the new year if needed.
English – Young Entrepreneurs will wrap up this month.  We will continue to look work on reading strategies and writing.
French – The Daily 3 continues, as well as sentence structures and hopefully touch on paragraph writing.
Art – integrated into the different units.
PE – this month we will continue to focus on teamwork, leadership skills, fair play and cooperative games.  We have also been playing Volleyball and will continue to do so until the break.
